ACTIVE CONSTITUENTS
Maqui berries are rich in anthocyanins and contain many other bioactive compounds like delphinidin, malvidin, petunidin, cyanidin, coumarins, triterpenes and flavonoids. They are high in dietary fiber, rich in iron, and a good source of calcium and potassium.
ANTHOCYANINS
Anthocyanins are potent plant compounds responsible for the deep purple to black color in fruits, vegetables and flowers. The word anthocyanin comes from two Greek words meaning “plant” and “blue.” Scientists say that the harsh climate of central and southern Chile, together with high solar radiation have increased the anthocyanins in the fruits and berries that are grown in that region.
HISTORY
The Mapuche Indians are the only known indigenous people in the Americas who have never been conquered by an invading force. For centuries the Mapuche have consumed the maqui berry for strength, stamina and to improve their health. The maqui berry tea-drinking Mapuches successfully resisted many attacking armies, including the Spanish conquistadors, the Mayans and the Incans!
